• 27% of all data breaches are in the healthcare industry, which is the largest of any industry?
  • Hackers pay up to $250 for a single healthcare record on the black market, 10 times more than credit cards.
  • 90% of healthcare organizations have had a breach in the last 2 years

What is Ransomware?
Ransomware is malicious software that installed by a 3rd party (hacker) that holds users files for ransom by encrypting all of their data so it is completely inaccessible. They demand the user pay a fee in exchange to unencrypt the data – typically giving the user a limited time to pay the fee. If the ransom isn’t paid, the hackers will destroy the data, and it will be lost forever. Ransom is typically paid in an e-currency (bitcoin, etc.) to make payments less traceable for authorities. Ransom prices are sometimes set lower so that it is more convenient than seeking help, although this isn’t always the case.

How they do it: Ransomware can end up on your computer in a number of different ways

  • Phishing emails
  • Unpatched programs
  • Compromised websites
  • Malvertising
  • Free software downloads

Why Healthcare?

Healthcare data is incredibly valuable, it typically includes social security numbers and other valuable data that hackers can use for identity theft. The healthcare industry is also massive, with so many targets. Its recent move to digitizing medical records has also created lots of vulnerabilities – healthcare has also been guilty of being laggards when it comes to digital security. The data is so critical to healthcare organizations that most entities pay the ransoms to keep operations running smoothly and safely.
